On the second picture from the bottom it reads: "Bak zapravliat Tolko dizeln toplivom" , which means " tank filling only diesel fuel" . This is word for word translation.
As far as I know, in low temperatures, they used diesel/petrol mixture to prevent fuel from freezing.
Unfortunately I don't remember the proportions.
During more recent years "winter diesel" has been used.
Thank you so much for clearing that up!!! I'll report back when I get home on leave at Christmas how warm it gets in the box.

What does your control box look like?
Hopefully these photos will show any differences. The black box with the button you asked about is for the petrol powered engine preheater. Why would the engine pre heater and the box heater have separate tanks if they were the same fuel? That said, I agree with Abrs about cold weather and diesel.
True, but there is a generator in the back of ours, and that has separate tanks too....

Thanks for the pictures, that tap does look similar to one I found.
I will upload my photos shortly....

If you look at the top left of the following picture, it looks like there is a similar tap to the one in your picture, jamie:

This is good, although it's pointing down. I will check if there is any plaque next to it. I guess it might be painted over.
Unfortunately, the front plaques have been painted over :(

I guess I should try to get the paint off and see what it says underneath...

Just above the cable connections, you will find leaver handle.
Heating when is pointing to the left, ventilation when is pointing to the right.

Thanks guys.
I also got this following translation from a mate who's mate works at the UN doing languagey stuff:

контроль разогрева свечи - glow-plug heating control
реле перегрева - overheat switch
указатель работы накопителя - heater On indicator
вкл.свечи - glow-plug switch
работа отопителя в режимах (ОТКЛ. -0 ПОЛН.-1 ЧАСТИЧН -1/2) - heater modes (off - full - partial)

порядок запуска отопителя - heater start up sequence

1. set the lever on the heater body into the position “отопление - heating” and open fuel tap
2. switch ON glow-plug . The spiral should glow.
3. After 30 sec. set mode selector in position 1/2
4. After 30 sec. switch off glow-plug. In about 3 min. heater On indicator should turn ON, if not - please repeat start up sequence
5. After 10 - 15 min. set mode selector to the position 1 (full)
