Hello from Tadley - the Centre of the Universe
Hi folks.
I've finally been and gone and done it - I'm in the process of buying and resurrecting a 1972 Radio bodied GAZ 66, which has been parked up for about 4 years.
I have spent a bit of time working out in Russia, Siberia, Kamchatka and Kazakhstan over the last few years, which is where I developed a soft spot for the Russian trucks.
6 feet of snow and -30C in a ZIL 131 in Novosibirsk is quite an experience
The GAZ 66 I rode in the back of in Vladivostok had a log-burner grafted in...
I'm looking forward to seeing the reaction of the Mod Plod as I drive past the main gate to the Atomic Weapons Establishment, on the way to work...
My only previous experience of Russian vehicle ownership was a Voskhod motorcycle. An interesting beast, which I don't regret no longer owning...

Welcome Andy,
Would you be so kind to chuck up a few pics of the interior of the body when its finally been emptied?
I think it's quite interesting with it having the partition etc..
Cheers Scott

Yes, of course, as soon as I can work out how to re-sample jpegs down to 100k (which seems to be the attachment size limit) now that windoze 10 seems to have got rid of all the useful photo editing features 7 had...Calfdozer99 wrote:Welcome Andy,

I will need to remove the rear partition in due course, as it prevents me puttinng bikes in the back - which was one of the main reasons for buying a GAZ as a camper...

Hi,
Best regards
Marcus
I would suggest Irfanview here... The other solution is to put the pictures to some other space on the web and link to there, this is how I do it most of the time. Wordpress.com is very helpful there and most of my GAZ related pictures are part of my GAZ 66 Blog.Bimblebox wrote:Yes, of course, as soon as I can work out how to re-sample jpegs down to 100k (which seems to be the attachment size limit) now that windoze 10 seems to have got rid of all the useful photo editing features 7 had...

Best option is to put the pictures on a photo hosting site, the 100kb images end up being impossible to see. Here is a link to the processBimblebox wrote:Yes, of course, as soon as I can work out how to re-sample jpegs down to 100k (which seems to be the attachment size limit) now that windoze 10 seems to have got rid of all the useful photo editing features 7 had...Calfdozer99 wrote:Welcome Andy,

That's open for debate. (No, not whether Tadley is in Yorkshire ;-) )portamurda1 wrote:Tadley can't be as its not in Yorkshire ;)
I can tell you precisely where the Middle of Nowhere is located, though.
It's at KURBB in the Kurchatov Array in Kazakhstan.

I know that, because I installed the seismometer there...

For simply resizing images to fit online (assuming Windows), I would strongly suggest the Image Resizer Powertool http://www.bricelam.net/ImageResizer/
On a more on-topic note, welcome, it seems GAZ66 is getting popular around here....

Welcom Andy. It's good to see another Gaz owner on the forum to share experience with. Looking forward to seeing some pics. Is this the black one from down Leicester way that was on ebay recently?
Cheers

I've spent the weekend stripping bits out of the shed. The big ventilation fan is out of the rear compartment and I have disconnected and pulled out all but one bits of wiring harness. I can now see the bulkhead.
Now, I have to work out how to remove it...
The bulkhead is made from the same ally/foam/ply composite as the walls of the box, but the rear face is covered with a 1/4" layer of neoprene foam.
It is held in place by battens each side, which are screwed into the panels of the box.
The rear face of the bulkhead is then covered with fibreglass, to seal it for NBC. This fibreglass coating covers the battens in the rear compartment.
The screws holding the battens to the body are deeply counterbored and buried under filler.
Oh, and they are some form of cross-head, but neither Phillips nor Pozidrive, and they are made of some form of Russian cheese.
The heads strip out as soon as the screw has turned just enough to get your hopes up...
I think I am going to have to resort to splitting the battens with a chisel to expose the screws, then Little Moles to the rescue...
Photos are going up in the usual place:
