UAZ 469 brakes

Happy new year to one and all :D
Well the year has started well as i received my UAZ on the 29th December and already had some fun with it in the snow. Just one thing i am not sure if it is normal and if anything can be done to improve it is that when braking i found i had to almost push my feet through the floor to get the beastie to stop and even then it sometimes felt it was not going to stop, which was pretty un nerving on my first heavy braking attempt. Is this normal? and is there any way to improve the braking performance? any suggestions would be gratefully received. Otherwise i am well impressed with my new baby :D
Cheers

Sounds like they need a bit of adjustment. Have you cleaned out the drums? Any cylinders leaking fluid onto the brake shoes? The Gaz has near identical brakes and I can easily lock all four wheels if I stand on the brake pedal. It may be worthwhile having the brake shoes relined with modern western material (with the added benefit of them being asbestos free)

Nice to see you back on the forum again - brakes are good on mine also - as Michael mentioned they probably just need adjustment - what year is it? later ones have servos fitted - some photos would be good!! :)

Congratiulations :D

It's the same with my Uaz. You have to push fairly hard compared to a more modern car but I can lock all four wheels on tarmac.

I would recommend that you work your way through the brake system completely and check for seizes and leaks. Relined brake pads are probably a better bet than replacement parts because of the quality.

Thanks for all the response i got some good feedback but now just think it is bedding in that is needed as there was an overhall of the breaking system done so will wait to see how it goes although not back in UK now until February so will not get to test the theory out until then.
Cheers
Allan

My brakes have turned out to be a massive ballache ... all of a sudden all four of the cylinders have started leaking and the front shoes are cracked any ideas on improving the situation?
Would a simple regulation be enough or does that look like a full breaks refit?

Go for the full refit. Brakes and steering are two things I wouldn't play with. Everything else is just everything else!

But im sure there were new cillinders and pads on it so its a bit odd everything started going...
I've also heard of conversion kits to get proper breaks as oposed to drums... any thoughts?

Surprised that they have all gone at the same time. Sounds like the problem we have discussed before about the effect of Dot 4 on seals previously used with the old style fluid used in Russia.

If the bores of the cylinders are OK then keep them and refit replacement seals. Girling cup seals have fitted on all the ones I have needed to change so far on the Gaz and Uaz (inch sizes).

I'm using dot 3 if that makes a difference... I'm thinking of going with vitara breaks

http://allegro.pl/suzuki-grand-vitara-t ... 25012.html
something from a polonez aparently as well and not sure if exactly the same set up can be done on the back
not sure what else i would need...

certainly sounds like you may have a mix of brake fuid ? - Andrews Uaz Brakes very well but has the later servo fitted - maybe worth looking at? - I would change all brake cylinders - they are not expensive in Poland and change the master cylinder at the same time - flush out all the old fluid and fill up with Dot 4 - you can get the old shoes re lined here in England with modern material - if you have a problem let me know

Got some spare cylinders and shoe lining so need to make a decision wquite tempted to let those fall apart and buy a full conversion kit for 250 pounds and have ventilated brakes which will help massively with the reliability also might look at improving the suspension

Could you supply details on that. Some other members may be interested.

The price is excluding labour etc but with all the standard fittings required to make a conversion in a uaz like mine from 1983...I'll do my best to translate what it includes:
v3entilated disc brakes + pads, calipers, break swirtches and all the bits and pieces required to do the conversion
thats from tarmot in Poznan i got the info and quote for 1200 zlotys... thats to do the front axle only trying to work out if theres anything that would go on the back
The opther option is more challenging you get aftermarket fitting points for 89zlotych each and fit non ventilated suzuki vitara discs and polonez calipers ...

I would also be interested for the 'Project' Uaz - any more details on uprated suspension for competition?

Hi guys
Just starting to work on the breaks can you please follow up on your suggestions ie
Seal sizes I need and where to get the better lining materials cos I looked in the spares department of mine and the one I've got cracked during transport

Probably best to take one of the slave cylinders off and measure the bore to be certain but mine were 32mm (1 1/4"). Think the master was 22mm (7/8").
