Moving to UK

Post by Eastblock » Thu Jul 02, 2015 7:32 pm

I just got a contract offer at Vodafone Global so will have to move to Newbury in a couple of weeks time. I'm not relocating permanently so my family will stay on the Faroe Islands. The rate is very good - we have just bought a house here on the Faroes and I will be able to pay off most of the mortgage in just a years time.

Now the pressure is on to sort out accommodation and a car. IIRC getting insurance on a car without a permanent address, UK bank account and a utility bill is pretty near impossible. Any suggestions how to get around that? Rental will be too expensive in the long run. Accommodation wise I will have to find a cheap hotel and then start searching for a room when I'm there.

Newbury is not too far from O'Brien Army Base so if there is a winter meet, perhaps I might see some of you there?

Good news, 10 degrees celcius and seagull sorbet didn't sound much fun

Great news! Wagtails isn't that far from Newbury, either...

If I'm still in the UK this time next year I will come to Wagtails.

I'm sorted accommodation wise and I've rented a car for the first week. Once I move into the room I have rented I can get my UK drivers license updated with the new address and should then be able to get car insurance. Need to decide what car to look for.

That rather depends on how much you want to spend, what size you need and wether commuting or motorway

There is a bus service to work so only need a car for getting around on weekends. Something small and cheap to run will do. I've owned various Suzuki's and never had any problems with them.

Depending on how long I stay, I would love to get a 25+ year old LWB Lawn Mover, preferably one with a galvanized chassis. I would be able to register it as a classic car on the Faroes and there would be no tax to pay.

I'd actually prefer some sort of van but finding one that is over 25 years old is probably not easy.

Semi-seriously, do you want to buy a Trabant?

I would consider it. It would be a fun car to have on the Faroe Islands. Not sure how long it would last in that climate though. The air is very salty.

Sherpa, Iveco, merc are visible on roads round here 25 years plus...VW too expensive for what you get and would be in same condition as ford/Bedford/PSA/fiat/jap jobs of that era

Just pop in your local car auction, you'll be able to pick up an old motor with plenty of test on for a few hundred quid, remember though whatever you buy you'll have to tax it yourself, it's non transferable now.

Off I phuk again. Beginning of October I'm relocating to Germany. I work for a global organisation so it doesn't really matter which office I'm in. Since I can rent a nice apartment in Germany for £100 less than I pay for a single room in the UK it's a no-brainer. Plus I know several people in the area from when we lived there.

OK, obviously not moving to Munich or Frankfurt.

Anyhow: Welcome to Germany! :)

Not a bad area, central with almost realistic pricing.

Don't forget to drink a beer at Uerige from time to time in Düsseldorf. :-BD
