Funny, I've done a lot of thinking about the slowness too... if I manage to get hold of one it'll be fairly high up the list.

especially if you start towing something heavy!! - maybe you need something with 360 bhp and 'only' 12 tonnes :)

I want a daf 85 360 or 420 on a 6 wheeler, with a 10 ton crane, but that will carry 13 tons and pull a draw bar trailer with 20 tons capability for hauling, but havent quite found the right machine yet, I will.

or better still an 8 wheeler...but it must be on air suspension with a sleeper cab and three seats in the cab.

That makes the most sense, the Tatra's are great fun but certainly not suitable for modern haulage, well not unless you get one of the more modern 815's which are from 350hp upwards.

yes they would be fun but not sure i am going to take a 30k truck off roading...will stick with something like a daf 85 38 or 420 bhp engine thats my real target for the BHP...such an easy drive at that level of power...

Later Tatra lumps turn up on eBay etc, the V8 twin-turbos etc. and a lot of the truck trial & rally boys wring serious power out of them. Being divorced from the gearbox makes engine swaps a more straightforward prospect, and the original lump is pretty big so there's plenty space to play with. If only I had a big pot of money...

it cannot be beyond simple twiddling to improve the fuel flow and therefore the power a bit, even and extra 20 or 30 bhp would improve their usefulness...cooling air flow can easily be improved and the use of a larger oil cooler will help overall...I would think

Simply adjusting the maximum fuel delivery will increase output by about 25%, although you may not be able to see where you are going because of the black cloud that will emanate from the truck :D

I believe it's known as the smoke point, at which point you're no longer doing anything useful with the extra fuel. I'm not really a diesel geek but my boss is, apparently you need Harry Ricardo's book on engines where he 'splains all this sort of thing.

hmm yes more fuel in the engine must work if you can get the air in to at pressure then your onto a winner but if you just squirt the stuff in without additional air then I guess it is a waste...but i also assume there is a bit more to be had with a few tweeks here and there...will have to see what can be done once I get the old girl home, how do you dyno a big truck i wonder...
