Experience of using a Tatra 148? Is the engine reliable?

Engine is reliable and most importantly you can buy a 148 for 1/3 maybe 1/2 of Ural 4320 price.
148 is much longer, then Ural, so it's way too long for a LAK body.

The engine is basically the same as the V12 used in the 813 but it only has eight cylinders instead of twelve, the V12 is supposed to be very robust - no reason to think the eight pot wouldn't be the same. The 148 seems to be a very popular truck even today - in fact Tara resurrected the design recently and called it the Jamel, they even started selling Jamels over here for a while as quarry trucks - The good thing about the 148 is all parts are still available, and easy to get as the trucks are mostly built for civvi service not military.

Like this engine? Not sure why some have Vents on the front wings?

That's the engine, it's just like the bigger V12 in the 813.

The vents on the wings connect to pre-filter separators which are designed to separate out larger particles before they reach the main oil bath air filters, they use the vortex system much in the same way the Dyson vacuum does - wonder where he got the idea :? .....actually it was industrial air filters used for spray booths that gave him the idea, but anyway the system has been around a long time.

you see them fitted with just about everything in the Czech republic along with the Praga's

and what warewolf says is true, they are sure long, well most of the military ones we saw are anyway but they also still command good prices even though they are falling to bits...

I think the best compromise...ural 375 with cummins 220 or 230 engine, now that will be a truck and will cost likely 3k cheaper than a 4320...and be a darn site cheaper to run and likely more reliable although i have not heard of any horror stories about the 4320?

I am going to do it to one of my trucks. i am looking for the right engine now..so again will keep you all posted once its done...

Well one can always remove the chassis overhang but for log haulage idea as would allow somewhere for a crane which could also load a trailer behind. If the Tatra's are "Tatty". (I assume you mean the cabin not the mechanics) The Ural's engines are unreliable and this is the reason for a cummins. Then does that mean the Zil's are "Zippy" Why change an engine from original spec? Spares Issues? If one needs fine MPG then we should purchase a diesel VW Polo :(

What are the current trade prices on Tatra 148 (6x6 chassis and GOOD drivers cab) and where is a suitable source. (Used Diesel Ural's nice but too expensive)

As the Tatra has a tube chassis is there a spec for making a lightweight logging frame that would not cause damage to the vehicle.

Very easily, in fact I have photo's somewhere of one that had been fitted out as a forwarder, the chassis tube is more than strong enough, although you would probably want to also use two conventional chassis rails to facilitate the fitting of the bolsters and crane.

Will try to find photos ASAP.
