Move to New Zealand

Post by JoeB » Mon Sep 03, 2012 5:39 pm

My kids live in NZ and my wife and I are investigating taking up residence there in the not too distant future.
I of course looked into moving my Zil 131 radio station to NZ thinking I could show it there when I am not fishing 

If you think VOSA are tough, read this and weep.

Because the zil if HGV I need to apply and get a permit
A second permit is required as it is a vehicle of specialist interest
And a third permit needed to import a left hand drive vehicle.

LHD HGV are not allowed in NZ, but I was lead to believe that the permit of specialist interest would get around all that. Here is the answer from an VTNZ inspectors office” (via the military vehicle collectors club of NZ

More to think about.. I have consulted an ex NZMVCC member who is a VTNZ inspector..... he makes the following points...
1 ANY truck over 3500kg, going to be imported, to be road legal has to be RH drive.. although a bit messy, it can be done.

2 You can import it "as is" but will not be able to register it for Road use.

3 The park brake system you have will be acceptable but the foot (or "'service") brakes will have to be ABS or equivalent!!!!!! Even if it is a 1916 Packard!!!! Rules, rules, rules!!!

4 if it is diesel it will have to comply with Euro 4 emissions....

5 The vehicle has to be registered and owned by you in the Country from where it is shipped (I understand you would be OK on this)

WOW 
Now I am not a vehicle techi, but abs on a permanent 4x4 and optional 6x6 would this even work ?

Does anyone know if Zil ever produced a RHD 131?

The Cumin’s B fitted with intercooler was designed for Euro 3, only very recent trucks will meet Euro 4. The testing is apparently based upon the import date and not the date of manufacture.

I have the name of the “top dog” in the NZVT and will see if the inspector guys opinion is just out of the ball park

Keep you all informed
Over 50MPH zils are deadly, under 50 mph just dangerous :) Take Care/Joe

I know this is a old thread but did you manage to get the Zil to NZ and get it registered JoeB?
