Looking for a new truck
Hi,
Its been a long time since I wrote on this site!
I am currently looking for a new truck and canvasing opinion.
I want a non-Russian truck for
Festival work - moving heavy rigging in and out of muddy fields. For brand image the truck should look sexy.
4x4
Mid and rear dif (front dif too if possible)
Plenty of cargo space with capability to attach a rear tail lift
I am in France now and would eventually want to register the truck in France so something that is accepted over here in France.
Any suggestions welcome.
I was thinking of either
Mercedes 1017
or
Man Kat (of which there is a Man Kat A1 for sale in Germany for 16.000e that I might go an visit). 4x4
My Zil is curently parked up in a field. I feel like it is pretty much retired now. After several unsuccessful attempts I have given up on the brakes. So it no longer drives. But it did get us into Africa and back so no regrets.
Look forward to hearing your opinions
Phil

Not answering your question but asking another, what is the destiny of your Zil, is it UK registered?

Don't forget the various Iveco's from 3.5t upto 22t in standard specs. Centre, front and rear diff-locks
There's a few on fleabay...but if it's for France/Europe look on 'lebacoin' or 'subito' lots of low mileage ex mil, civil defence and off road fire trucks... mobile.de is a bit pricey

Re: Looking for a new truck
Zil is still registered in the UK, tax free and MOT exempt, insurance under a classic military vehicle deal. As I no longer use it I am considering declaring it SORN.
Not sure about Iveco - common here as its used up the Pyrénées but I have heard not great things about them.
I think leboncoin is pricey. I am looking in Germany, Czech and Holland.

Re: Looking for a new truck
I would have liked a Steyr 12m18 but they are rarely available.
So I am leaning towards the Man Kat A1

Re: Looking for a new truck
I'm kinda biased toward them, having worked on them, and know that much of the suspicion is based on the same levelled at fiat/Italian stuff...but mostly unfounded even going back to eighties. Even in my current field (literally, in farming) all the big agri manufacturers are going over to Iveco engines and drive trains (not just the case/new holland as their the same group) but loads who used to use cummins, perkins and Japanese, Korean and former Eastern European. All the major arms manufacturers and armies use either just the engines or whole vehicles...so can't be all that badautonomy wrote: Not sure about Iveco - common here as its used up the Pyrénées but I have heard not great things about them.

Re: Looking for a new truck
So finally I've settled on a Man Kat A1 4x4
first registered in 2000.
Its got the Man engine rather than air cooled Deutz, automatic gear box, Hi-Lo ratio, Front, Rear and Mid diff locks,
Good overall condition.
