13.00 18 tyre

Post by Gareth » Mon Jul 24, 2023 5:21 pm

Has anybody run a 13.00 18 tyre on a Gaz66?
They seem to have a pattern more favourable for road.
I have thought about new wheels that ae EU sized but not sure on what to do.
The CTIS doesnt really matter as the tyres can be topped using a hose and normal tyre inflator

I had a set of K58 tyres 340-457 13.00 18 6ply from Germany. The problem was the inner tube overinflating and tearing at the valve. You'd need to find an appropriate tube with the angled stem.
The tyres were a bigger circumference and heavier so it struggled even more uphill.
The fit on the rim was incredibly tight.
The tyres themselves were old and ruptured within a few miles unfortunately

I did however manage fine with the 13.00 x 18 Stomils and the 12 inner tube

Didn’t Zoltan (Colin) mess about with different tyres and end up getting some rims made up

Yes that's right. Colin had some 20 inch rims made to take military tyres available here.
It's a bit if a pain getting tyres here from abroad. I got mine from Baltyre in Slovenia

Aspect wheels made me a set of 5 11x20 rims with Gaz-66 centres when we had exhausted every avenue to get any 18" tyres quite some time ago. It was quite a spendy exercise at the time.

We literally tried everything to get K-70s or Stomils and all we could find were so-called "new" old stock which had sat stacked in piles for 30 years ready to crack when re-inflated

Aspect were easy to work with, I supplied them a CAD drawing of exactly what I wanted and they made the 5 rims up and supplied them shod with Continental MTP-81 tyres with tubes in a 335/80/20 size. That size and pattern is a Unimog tyre which rolls well and works OK in mud and snow. They've worn really well. I've no idea how many miles they've done now but they have been a trouble free fitment.

The 335/80/20 is a smaller rolling diameter than the K-70 so it has compromised cruising speed but I'm running a ZF 5 speed gearbox with overdrive fifth with the Cummins 6bta and different ring and pinions in the axles so all of my running gear is hugely different but I am losing a few mph to sit at my ideal 1800-1900rpm

If it wasn't so much hassle to buy them I would go with the T5 Stomils now as they represent the best combination of rolling diameter, road manners and off road performance. They don't look as good as the K-70s though!
